Off-cut Leather Bags

These bags are made from factory off-cut and rejected leather that may have otherwise been wasted, which is why each bag is unique in finish and colors.
We hand pick our artisans on our travels, and work closely with them and their families over hundreds of cups of chai. Our bags reduce the impact on the environment, reduce waste and help create work in the developing world.

Ha ha ha! I love them. And actually, we *do* attemt to reduce waste of their dead family members. Pacemakers and other implants are removed from all corpses to be cremated, and by burying the remains, they are recycled as vegetation.

However, there are a lot of furniture made of leather that end up in landfill; this would be a great way to prevent it from going to landfill seeing that the leather is already in circulation.

Yeah, that’s true. But in that case, leather has the advantage of being not only biodegradeable, but also compostable :-) That’s one of many advantages of leather over imitation leather.

So in waste deposits over here (Europe), leather furniture is stripped and sorted. Springs are melted with other metals, wood is shredded and reused as (amongst other things) pellets, chips or fibreboard, and the leather (plus organic stuffing) is composted. Don’t know what they do with foam stuffing.
