Real Grass Roofs Of Norway

green-roof-norway

For hundreds of years, houses in Norway have been covered with turf. And they come in different varieties. Some are bright green and almost velvety. Others are golden and look like they’re growing wheat or oats. A number of turf roofs have flowers mixed in with the grass, and a few have small trees.

Great ! Awesome.

My thought is this: These roofs are probably insulating in the winter, cooling in the summer, but, not very good in a hurricane, especially, the ones with trees.

@ Codger Wilts: Nope, no lawnmowers. We usually put our goats up there once a month, though.

I was just in Norway for a month visiting relatives, and the grassy roofs were definitely eye-catching. I noticed that they were much more prevalent in the countryside as opposed to the southern coast. I saw someone “cutting” his grass with a sickle.

The way that they are built is extremely unique too, because they need to prevent rot, water, and bugs. I remember my uncle saying that one of the linings can be compared to a tough bubble wrap. very interesting.

thanks for posting. : )

Worth noting that normal residential houses don’t have this. It’s more like a cabin fashion to put turf on the roofs now in modern days.
Very few homes have turf on the roof, but practically every cabin has it XD
