The foundry molds in this functional sculpture are the centerpiece for its design. We worked to create something that shows the beautiful character of the century-old wood forms, while giving them a new life and purpose. Our design incorporates both ambient lighting and cabinet storage built in to the free standing assemblage. The result is a truly one-of-a-kind piece of art that is both an homage to the past and a nod towards the future.
Seven foundry molds compose the body of “Volstead”. Hinges for the cabinet doors are reused, as well as the 3/4′ pipe and connectors that join the pieces structurally. The lamp wiring is new (for safety reasons), as are the antique style light bulbs.
*This piece won the People’s Choice Award in a designers challenge in which 18 designers contributed projects made from salvaged materials. The entries were then auctioned with the benefits proceeding Easter Seals.
