To create this cathedral (size 28 x 12 x 9 in), I deconstructed cigar boxes then searched for unique artifacts in the San Miguel de Allende area. The final project features traditional Mexican Feather art on the 2nd tier above a Diego and Frida post card. I paired the dynamic duo with Mexican lotería pieces of a devil (Diego) and pierced heart (Frida). On the side, I placed a classic religious artwork that to me depicts the dichotomy of fear and beauty. I even put in an original print by myself, Geoff Wilce. All items were found at flea markets, mercardos and junk stores and purchased from people who know first hand the story of the “forgotten” items. The Big Cathedral is the first in a series of art boxes I am currently working on in my studio.
These recycled art boxes bridge the divide between historic relics and a contemporary aesthetic. They are fun to make from connecting with a local guy who hunts for milagros with his metal detector, to listening to my favorite music in the studio while refurbishing items that may otherwise have been forgotten.
