At Recyclart, we love corks and all those amazing projects that re-use corks to make creative and original things. But, one of the biggest problems with corks is to cut them nicely. Here are step-by-step instructions we found that will help you how to cut your corks without any difficulties!
- Fill a saucepan with a couple inches of water.
- Add strainer/sifter to the pan. Make sure the water does not touch the apparatus.
- Add corks to the apparatus.
- Cover the saucepan.
- Boil water for 3 minutes.
- Cut corks like cutting butter.
- That’s it!
Did you try this method? What do you think of it? Do you have any other (better) method to share?
Hell yeah! This rules!!
cook em for what? Never heard of that.
Cut not cook
thanx, ben, got mixed up with the pot and everything.
Why would you want to cut cork
Why cut cork? Perhaps you want to make something, but don’t need the large cork (the craft calls for small pieces, so you have to cut one large cork into smaller bits).
OR, like I would like to do, make a stamp out of a cork. This requires cutting into the cork.
So, we want to steam the corks rather than boil them, correct?
Yes, don’t allow the corks to touch the water.
does this work only on natural cork, or is it good for synthetic cork too?
Are synthetic corks processed the same way for cutting?
How does this affect size (i.e. do they swell). If I need my pieces 1/2 inches long will they shorten after cooling off(after cutting at 1/2)?
Didn’t work for me, maybe I was doing too many corks!
IT WORKS on dry corks. I’ve made many an animal ornament, such as mice that I’ve had to slice a cork for things like making mouse ears. I use garden flower clippers to cut the corks. They especially work well for making a point (like a mouses face)!
Well… not exactly like cutting through butter… but easier.
