Richard Shilling makes sculptures from natural materials he gathers near to where each sculpture is made. “In early spring 2009 I started a project to investigate the leaf colours of spring and summer and discovered that the rich colours of autumn are also present in spring and summer.
Many of my leaf sculptures look like they were created in autumn but most of them weren’t. If you are interested in a particular sculpture then look for it on my blog or on Flickr and you might be surprised at the date that it was created.
Once I had investigated those two months I decided to do the same in winter and I was very surprised to find that I could create many of my trademark leaf sculptures in mid winter too. Although some of the in between hues you will find in autumn are not there, all of the main colours are still. These three sun wheels were created in mid december from leaves found that day. We live in a colourful world and winter is certainly not all about brown and grey.”
This has opened my eyes to the wide range of colors of winter – my prejudice had closed my awareness to the many colors around me, even at this time of year in Ohio.
