Caravan Visitor Centre

UCLAN MA student, Artist Carol Ramsay showcased her Caravan Visitor Centre at New Ferry Butterfly Park, Wirral (a little know nature reserve). Opened by Alison McGovern MP, who cut the ribbon to make it all official. The project was thought up to draw attention the the Butterfly Park and to engage with the local commumity.

The caravan was a 1977 Avondale Wren, ready to be sent to the tip, full of black mould and literally falling apart but was recycled and refurbished by Carol + her partner Ian to give it a new lease of life. Carol has tried to retain the beauty of the old caravan and has kept a few of the original features such as an old gas lamp.

It’s used now as an actual visitor centre for the Butterfly Park, with it’s own lepidoptera drawers just like they have in museums but filled with butterflies hand made from paper by local school children. It has it’s own reference library but the books are actually artists altered books and a gallery space. The whole project is an artwork, a play on a visitor centre but one that can actually be used as an educational facility for workshops on site or toured around to inform people about the park and it’s work.
