I use discarded Christmas cards to make Christmas ornaments, and rather than throw away the scraps, I sort them by color and use them to make mosaics. I wanted this one to look a little like stained glass.
If this image were done with glass tiles or broken plates or bits of marble, it would be too heavy to easily hang on the wall. But this mosaic is quite light.
It’s a soothing art-form, and it’s neat to watch it gradually take shape. Plus it shows the power of many, many little pieces. One little bit of colored card stock doesn’t seem to matter much, but when put together with lots of other little bits, it adds up to something beautiful. Kind of like our efforts to recycle, conserve, and re-imagine….together, it does matter, even though individually, what we do seems insignificant.
